How to use split screen on Xiaomi [with screenshots]

With Android phones like Redmi, Xiaomi, Poco, etc., you can do more than one thing at once. People now prefer using more than one app at once to save time. Thankfully, Xiaomi has a split-screen feature. So, in this guide, I will show you how to use split screen on Xiaomi phones, what it can do for you, and what to do if yours doesn’t work.

How to use split screen on Xiaomi

Xiaomi split screen feature is also known as multi-window, which allows you to use two apps simultaneously on the same screen. Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI Android operating system support this functionality, which is available in most Xiaomi devices running MIUI 9 and above.

So, for this guide, I’m using MIUI 14. It should be the same steps for most versions.

Below are the simple steps on how to use split screen on Xiaomi:

1. Go to recent apps

Recent apps

On Xiaomi devices with on-screen navigation, this button is represented by a square icon at the bottom of the screen. On devices with physical navigation buttons, the “Recent apps” button is usually on the right side of the home button.

My device for this tutorial uses the MIUI gesture feature, so there are no buttons on my screen.

While in the “recent apps” screen, tap and hold on the app you want to use split screen on Xiaomi. The app will be highlighted with split several options.

2. Tap the Split Screen mode icon

Scroll through your list of recent apps and tap on the second app you want to use split screen on Xiaomi.

The screen will now be divided into two sections, with each app occupying half of the display.

For some MIUI versions, you will find the “Split Screen” option at the top of the screen. Just tap on it to enter split screen mode.

4. MIUI Screen is now split

How to adjust split screen size

Adjust screen size

You can adjust the size of the apps. Just tap, hold, and drag up or down the screen split divider or separator line marked in red in the screenshot above. This allows you to allocate more screen space to the app that requires more attention.

How to exit split screen on Xiaomi

To exit split screen mode:

  1. Press and hold the separator line between the two apps.
  2. Drag the separator line to the top or bottom of the screen, depending on which app you want to close.
  3. The remaining app will now occupy the full screen. So, you just exited the Xiaomi split screen.

MIUI split screen not working

Below are the reasons MIUI split screen won’t work:

1. Incompatible MIUI version

Not all Xiaomi, Redmi, or Poco MIUI versions support the split screen feature. Generally, devices running MIUI 9 and later versions are compatible. To check your MIUI version:

  1. Open the “Settings” app on your device.
  2. Scroll down and tap on “About phone.”
  3. Check the MIUI version under the “MIUI” section.

Try updating your device to use split screen on Xiaomi.

2. Incompatible apps

Some Android apps do not support split screen mode. In such cases, you will see a message indicating that the app does not support split screen.

Try using alternative apps that offer similar functionality and support split-screen mode.
